A Healthier Apple Crumble for Fall
There’s something about this time of year that makes me crave the comforting flavors of apple pie. With the crisp fall air and the abundance of apples at the farmers market, I find myself wanting to bake all the time. But let’s be real—as much as I love apple pie, I’m also looking for healthier options that don’t leave me feeling weighed down.
Enter this healthier apple crumble recipe! This version is perfect when you’re craving those warm, cinnamon-spiced flavors without all the butter and sugar that typically comes with a pie.
It’s simple, gluten-free, and sweetened with maple syrup instead of refined sugar. Plus, the addition of vanilla Greek yogurt on top? It totally feels like a guilt-free version of ice cream! The creamy yogurt complements the warm crumble perfectly, adding a little protein while keeping it light.
Ingredients:
sliced apple: I leave the skin on, personal preference
cornstarch
cinnamon
lemon juice
maple syrup
oats
salt
gluten free flour: or you can use any other flour of your choice
***you can sub flour for protein powder for extra protein.
Why I Love This Recipe:
Not only does this apple crumble give me all the fall vibes, but it’s also incredibly easy to make. If you’ve got 30 minutes, you can whip up this dessert, and the best part is, it’s made with ingredients you likely already have in your pantry.
And when it comes to feeding a crowd or making enough for leftovers (because who doesn’t love apple crumble the next day?), doubling the batch is a breeze. Just use a larger baking dish, and you’ve got dessert for the whole family or enough to store in the fridge for a few days.
Cooking Tips:
1. Choosing Your Apples:
Go for a tart apple like Granny Smith if you prefer a contrast to the sweetness of the maple syrup. For something sweeter, Honeycrisp or Gala apples work beautifully.
2. Make it Ahead:
This crumble is great for meal-prepping. You can prepare the apple mixture and the crumble topping separately, then assemble and bake when you’re ready. This way, you can enjoy fresh apple crumble even on your busiest days.
3. Customize the Topping:
If you’re a fan of nuts, adding a tablespoon of chopped walnuts or almonds to the crumble topping will give it an extra crunch and a dose of healthy fats.
Serving Suggestions:
• As I mentioned, the vanilla Greek yogurt serves as a lovely stand-in for ice cream, providing that creamy texture without all the added sugar. If you’re feeling extra fancy, you can drizzle a little honey or more maple syrup over the yogurt to bring everything together.
• This crumble is best served warm, but if you have leftovers, don’t worry! Store them in the fridge and reheat in the oven or microwave. It’ll make for an even cozier breakfast the next morning, especially with a cup of coffee.
I hope you love this healthier take on apple crumble as much as I do. It’s the perfect fall dessert when you want all the comforting flavors of apple pie without the extra guilt.
Enjoy!
