why i love these Healthy-ish brownies

who doesn’t love a good brownie?

When you have nutriton limitations or are simply just trying to cut refined sugar and eat a moderativly healthy diet, finding a good sweet treat is hard to find.

These brownies are free of refined sugar + flours, use just a few simple ingridents,  guilt free and taste amazing! this is one recipe you are going to make over and over again!

I am calling them healthy-ish because even though they are “clean”, they still have calories, but I promise what you put into your body matters more than the amount of calories you eat in a day!

What you need:

  • Oat Flour: I usually just make my own by blending gf oats in the food processer for a few minutes. I like to do a big batch and just store them in the pantry to save time for whenever i get a sweet tooth. You do not have to use gluten free oat for this, personal preference.
  • cocoa powder: buy a good brand! I love the one from Trader Joes!
  • salt
  • baking soda
  • baking powder
  • eggs: room temperature
  • Coconut oil: you want it to be melted, but not too hot, so that way it does not harden when adding in the other ingredients
  • maple syrup or honey
  • apple sauce
  • vanilla extract
  • Good Quality Chocolate: since we are keeping these brownies healthy-ish I love a good dark chocolate for this recipe! You can use choclate chips for this recipe or my personal favorite, a good quality- no nonsense chocolate bar! I love this dark chocolate bar from Red Chocolate with no refined sugar added to these bars this handcrafted chocolate is made with simple ingredients, zero sugar and 45% less calories + it taste amazing and adds such a rich flavor to these fudgy brownies!

Let's make it!

no mixers needed here-

  • you are just going to mix your wet ingreidents together in a large bowl
  • in a smaller bowl mix together the dry ingredients
  • stir the wet and the dry ingredients together until combined and then fold in the chopped up chocolate bar or chocolate chips
  • I do suggest using parchment paper in an 8×8 brownie pan
  • bake at 350 for 22-25 minutes!
  • cut into 12-16 squares!
when these brownies are done, they come out so gooey and delicious!

Make sure you let them cool all the way before cutting or they might crumble just a little!

I hope you make these!

Tips for making these Healthy-ish Brownies-

Where can I buy oat flour?

I usually just make mine at home by blending gluten free oats in the food proccessor for about 3 minutes. I always buy a big bag at Trader Joes when i go, but here is another great brand that i love from amazon!

Sugar subsitutions:

You can subsitute the maple for honey or monk fruit, but I would not reccomend subsituting for any other sweetener like stevia, i’m just not a fan, but you do you!

Lining the pan and letting them cool:

don’t forget to line the pan with parchment paper! If you don’t have any, generously spray with an olive or avocado oil. GF baking can be tempermental at times, so I definetly suggest waiting for them to cool down for at least 30 minutes before cutting!

Prep Time 10 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 cup oat flour gluten free
  • ½ cup cocoa powder 70% or higher
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ cup coconut oil melted, but not too hot
  • 3 eggs room temp
  • ½ cup maple syrup or honey
  • ¼ cup apple sauce no sugar added
  • 1½ tsp vanilla extract
  • ¾ cup dark chocolate chips

Let's Make It

  • Preheat the oven to 350℉
  • In a small bowl, mix together the dry ingredients: oat flour, cocoa powder, salt , baking soda, baking powder and set aside
  • In a large bowl mix the wet ingredients together: coconut oil, eggs, maple syrup, apple sauce, vanilla- whisk until smooth
***if your coconut oil hardens because the eggs or maple syrup is cold- fill a bowl with hot water and place the bowl with the wet ingredients over the bowl of hot water for a few minutes. This will slightly warm up the wet ingredients just enough so that the coconut oil melts.
  • Add the dry ingredients into the wet and stir until combined
  • Fold in the chocolate chips or chopped up chocolate bar
  • Line an 8x8 brownie pan with parchment paper, pour in the brownie batter and bake at 350℉ for 22-25 minutes!
  • Let the Brownies cool for at least 30 minutes before cutting into 12 squares!
