DIY Vase Hack

It’s a classic story of rags to riches- using this DIY Vase Hack we turned old Goodwill vases in to NEW home decor pieces.

For this Project I asked my 11 year old daughter, kensley to help. She loves doing projects and absolutely loves thrifting! She is at the age where doing stuff with mom isn’t cool anymore, so I’m glad she like doing stuff like this with me still.

Goodwill has a ton of vases/dishes on hand at all times- it’s 100% #facts. People donate the ugliest stuff and most of it can be refurbished into all kinds of stuff. I will say that I feel like these vases were a little on the pricey side. That vase with the tree on it was $4…..like what? I swear my mom had that same set that she used to set up in the hutch every Christmas!

I think the Dollar Store has lots of cute cases that just need a little TLC. You could also get candle holders and other dishes to paint too. I have thought of so many things to paint since doing this project. Just get creative!

After picking up with vases we went over to Home Depot and picked out the paint. To save on cost I just got the sample size paint ($5/ea). You can pick whatever colors you want, but I wanted more neutral tones. I picked BEHR MARQUEE:

  • Antique White
  • Orange Flambe (looks the most like terra-cotta)
  • Black Mocha
  • Plateau (the beige)

The paint samples come in a satin finish and that will work just fine. Be sure to pick up a plastic drop cloth and a package of sponge brushes!

Ok lets get to it-

Lay down the drop cloth and start by adding 1 tsp of baking soda to each paint sample. I read that it was 1 tsp of baking soda to each cup of paint, but this did not give me to consistency I was looking for. We ended up adding about 3-4 tsp of baking soda to each paint sample. You want it to be the consistency of pancake batter. Honestly, you can’t really mess it up, so don’t worry. If it ends up being a little too thick, it will just have more texture.

Give each vase a couple of coats- letting it dry for about 15 mins in between each coat. I did not paint the whole enitre inside of each vase, but just enough around the rim so you couldn’t tell.

You can style these however you want. I think they would be cute as center pieces at a baby/bridal shower. I purchased a dried pampas grass arrangement (link bellow) from amazon and then put a few of them on my dresser in my bedroom and the rest on a shelf in the living room.

That is it- Just vases + paint + baking soda.

I hope you give this hack a try. Send me pics of your creations!

I Have also tried this hack on Dollar Store Candle Stick Holders and Margarita Glasses

Using this same leftover paint I gave these dollar store margarita glasses and candle holders a whole new look!

I can’t even tell you how many times I have looked at these maragita glasses at the dollar store and never bought them because I though they looked cheap (but I love cactus’).  I used the same paint colors as above and just painted the bottom of them and then did white half way up the glass. You will definitely have to handwash these.

Also- any imperfections give it so much more character and make them look handmade or like pottery.

I have been wanting to get some candle holders like this for a while and when I saw these I just had to fix them up! I used some leftover flat black paint and mixed it with 1 tsp of baking powder, gave them two coats and let them dry completely before the next coat. Super easy and only cost me $3!
