after 35 my body gave up on me. I was tired, had stomach issues, gained weight, got hormonal and gained more weight. My diet was the same, my movement was the same (as long as I had the energy), the only thing that changed was my age. I started to try all kinds of things- fasting, purple tea, more cardi0, less cardio, working out more, dieting harder and nothing was changing, except for the scale. it kept going up!

Back in December I heard about a supplement called berberine, I decided to give it a try. I have had some small results with other natural supplements and was desperate to lose the 15+ lbs of hormonal weight gain I put on over the last year. Within a week or two I felt a noticeable difference in how my stomach felt, but after 2-3 weeks I knew it was really REALLY working because my clothes were not as tight and I had so much more energy! The weight seriously began to fall off! Within 3 months I had lost 17lbs and my body feels so good, inside and out! I could not believe that I actually worked….I mean NOTHING else worked…???? How???

I began to share my experience on Instagram and everyone immediately needed to try for themselves! I’ve heard some amazing feedback and some feedback has been that it didn’t work for them and I think that is normal, with anything! But I have done some research and want to share everything I learned about maximizing your results, side effects and all the in between!

Before I go any further, I want to say that everyone’s body is different. We are all on a personal journey and you might not have the same results as someone else. there could be underlying issues going on in your body and that’s why it is always best to consult with a doctor before taking any kind of supplement.

What is Berberine?

Berberine is a bioactive compound extracted from several plants used in traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine. Its benefits primarily come from its ability to activate an enzyme called AMPK (AMP-activated protein kinase) — sometimes referred to as the body’s “metabolic master switch.” AMPK plays a key role in regulating how the body produces and uses energy, which directly impacts fat burning, insulin sensitivity, and glucose metabolism.

In other words, berberine helps your body process carbohydrates and fats more efficiently while stabilizing blood sugar and improving overall metabolic function. That’s why people are calling it “natures ozempic”.

How Berberine Supports Weight Loss

Berberine works on multiple levels to support weight loss and improve body composition:

 1. Improves Insulin Sensitivity

Insulin resistance is one of the biggest barriers to weight loss. When your cells become resistant to insulin, your body stores more fat and struggles to regulate blood sugar. Berberine increases insulin sensitivity, helping your cells absorb and use glucose more effectively.

2. Reduces Blood Sugar Spikes

High blood sugar levels can lead to increased fat storage and constant cravings. Berberine helps reduce the amount of sugar released into the bloodstream after meals, leading to more stable energy levels and fewer cravings.

3. Boosts Fat Metabolism

By activating AMPK, berberine increases the rate at which your body burns fat for energy. It also reduces fat storage by regulating how your body processes lipids (fats).

 4. Reduces Appetite and Cravings

Berberine has been shown to improve the hormones involved in hunger and satiety, helping to naturally reduce appetite and cravings for sugar and processed carbs.

5. Supports Gut Health

Healthy gut bacteria play a major role in metabolism and weight regulation. Berberine has antimicrobial properties that can positively shift gut bacteria balance, supporting digestion and overall metabolic health.

How to Take Berberine for the Best Results

Getting the best results with berberine depends on consistency, timing, and dosage. Here’s how to get the most out of it:

💊 1. Dosage and Frequency

  • The recommended dosage is 500 mg, 2 to 3 times per day for a total daily dose of 1,000–1,500 mg.
  • Start with 500 mg once a day for the first few days to assess tolerance, then increase gradually.
  • For best results, split the doses to maintain consistent levels throughout the day.
  • If you are not seeing any results after 3 weeks, try bumping up your dosage to 3 a day! 1000-1500mg/day
  • I took mine on an empty stomach, one in the morning and one in the evening. I found that when taking two at once, I would have an upset stomach.

🍽️ 2. Timing for Maximum Effectiveness

• Take berberine 30 minutes before meals to help reduce the blood sugar spike that happens after eating.

• If you experience stomach discomfort, try taking it with food instead of before meals.

• Avoid taking berberine late at night, as it could interfere with sleep due to its effect on blood sugar and metabolism.

🌿 4. What to Pair with Berberine for Better Results

Berberine works well when combined with other supplements that support blood sugar regulation and metabolic health:

• Milk thistle – Improves berberine absorption and supports liver health.

• Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) – Enhances glucose uptake and fat burning.

• Cinnamon extract – Supports insulin sensitivity and blood sugar balance.

Probiotics – Helps maintain a balanced gut microbiome, which can be disrupted by berberine’s antimicrobial properties.

*** this one is so important! After asking for feedback from my online community on how they felt after taking berberine, a few mentioned bloating which is a side effect. Berberine can disrupt the microbiome in your gut in some cases, so if you are experiencing bloating, a probiotic should really help! I swear by them and take them daily! • Chromium – Supports insulin function and may reduce cravings for sweets.

🥗 5. Diet and Lifestyle Adjustments That Amplify Results

Berberine enhances weight loss and metabolic health, but it works best when paired with a balanced diet and healthy habits:

  •  Prioritize Protein – High-protein meals keep you fuller longer and prevent muscle loss during weight loss.
  •  Reduce Processed Carbs – Since berberine helps regulate blood sugar, cutting back on sugar and refined carbs helps it work more effectively.
  •  Eat More Fiber – Fiber improves gut health and stabilizes blood sugar levels.
  •  Add Healthy Fats – Omega-3s (found in salmon, walnuts, and flaxseeds) support fat metabolism and inflammation reduction.
  •  Stay Hydrated – Proper hydration supports digestion and nutrient absorption, which improves the effectiveness of berberine.
  •  Strength Training – Building muscle increases metabolic rate and improves insulin sensitivity, working synergistically with berberine.
I continued a regular healthy/balanced diet while on berberine and continued my normal workouts, I was losing so much fat, my body began to move better and because of the increase in energy I had more motivation to workout. I highly suggest adding in as much moderate movement as possible!

🔄 3. Cycling to Maintain Effectiveness

Your body can build a mild tolerance to berberine over time, so it’s important to cycle it:

• Use berberine for 8–12 weeks consistently.

• Take a 1–2 week break before starting again to reset your system and maintain effectiveness.

• Cycling helps avoid gut microbiome disruption and keeps berberine working optimally.

After taking berberine for 12 weeks, I felt like my body was ready to take a break, later on when I read this I. was glad I listened to my body. I do plan on cycling it again in the next few weeks, but I do think this is very helpful in the effectiveness of berberine!

What to Expect When Taking Berberine

Results with berberine aren’t immediate, but most people begin to notice changes within 2–4 weeks. Here’s what you might experience:

  •  Reduced cravings – Less desire for sugary snacks and processed carbs.
  •  Steady energy levels – Fewer afternoon crashes and more consistent focus.
  •  Fat loss – Particularly in the abdominal area.
  •  Better digestion – Less bloating and improved gut health.

I noticed all of these changes very fast and began to notice the weight loss by week 3.

Potential Side Effects and How to Manage Them

While berberine is generally well tolerated, some people may experience side effects, especially when starting at a high dose:

⚠️ Digestive issues – Bloating, cramping, and diarrhea are common when starting out. Try reducing the dose or taking it with food. I did notice a little more of an upset stomach in the beginning, but my body adjusted after a while.

⚠️ Low blood sugar – Berberine can lower blood sugar levels too much when combined with other glucose-lowering medications or supplements. There are times I feel a little queasy and then I will usually have a snack.

⚠️ Interactions with medications – If you’re on medications for diabetes, blood pressure, or blood thinning, consult with a healthcare provider before starting berberine.

⚠️ Gut microbiome disruption – Cycling off berberine periodically can help prevent long-term disruption of gut bacteria. I did this and feel amazing, I will start back up next week!

The side effects I had

For the most part I did not have any side effects at all, only if I took two at once would I get an upset stomach and I did have nausea in the mornings sometimes and it lasted for maybe 5 mins and went away quickly with even just water, but I eat almost immediately after waking up so I can have coffee asap.

When I asked my community about their experience I did have a few people say it made them throw up. I would say if you are experiencing that to try taking it with food before you just give up.

I also had a few people say they had bloating and that can be corrected with a probiotic, linked above.

I had been warned from numerous hair dressers and friends that you can experience hair loss with any RAPID weight loss. I do suggest taking a hair growth supplement when starting this journey. I can’t say it will or will not happen and I do not want it to, so to be safe, I recommend DIVI (use this link to save $20). I personally had a ton of breakage that I do not think was 100% cause by the weight loss, I have very sensitive hair and I bleached it during my journey. BAD IDEA! So, now, I have lots of those bleached pieces breaking off, but my hair seems to actually be growing faster bc my roots are grown out more in between appointments.

Who Should Be Cautious with Berberine

Please consult with a health care professional before taking!

Berberine is not recommended for:

❌ Pregnant or breastfeeding women – Safety data is limited.

❌ People with low blood pressure or hypoglycemia – It may lower blood pressure or blood sugar too much.

❌ Individuals taking prescription medications – Particularly medications for blood sugar, blood pressure, and blood thinning.

Tips for success

✅ Start with a low dose and increase gradually.

✅ If you experience stomach discomfort, try taking it with meals.

✅ Cycle berberine use (8–12 weeks on, 1–2 weeks off) to maintain effectiveness.

✅ Focus on a balanced diet and regular exercise — berberine enhances weight loss but doesn’t replace a healthy lifestyle.

The brand I used

I started by taking the hum brand and quickly switched to JS Health bc I love their products and I already have a subscription with them. I do not know which brand is better or if it even matters, but it is what worked for me, I just can’t say other brands don’t work or this one works better. I will say though, that the few people that did not see results (2 so far) did not use JSH
