Pumpkin Cheesecake Streusel Muffins (Better Than Starbucks!)

I’m not usually someone who craves a lot of sweet treats, but every year when fall rolls around, I start thinking about those pumpkin cream cheese muffins from Starbucks. I don’t know what it is, but there’s just something about that soft pumpkin muffin with the cream cheese center that gets me every time!

So this year, I decided to make my own version at home, and I have to say, I think these turned out even better!

These Pumpkin Cheesecake Streusel Muffins are soft, full of pumpkin spice flavor, and have the most delicious creamy cheesecake center. But instead of the pumpkin seeds you find on the Starbucks version, I added a buttery cinnamon streusel topping, which might be my favorite part.

I love being able to make things like this at home with simple ingredients and knowing exactly what’s going into them. And while these are still a sweet treat, there’s just something about homemade that I love so much more.

Plus, they’re actually really easy to make! No complicated steps or fancy baking skills required.

These would be so good for a slow Saturday morning with a cup of coffee, a fall brunch, or even to have ready for Thanksgiving morning.

If you love those Starbucks pumpkin cream cheese muffins as much as I do, you have to try these!

Why You’ll Love These Pumpkin Cheesecake Streusel Muffins

I’m all about making things at home when I can, especially when they’re this easy and turn out this good.

  • Inspired by the Starbucks favorite: You get that same delicious combination of pumpkin spice and sweet cream cheese, but with a homemade twist.
  • The buttery cinnamon streusel: Instead of pumpkin seeds, these have a sweet, crumbly topping that makes them taste like something from a bakery.
  • So soft and moist: The pumpkin purée keeps these muffins perfectly tender.
  • Simple ingredients: Everything you need is easy to find, and you probably already have most of it in your kitchen.
  • Perfect for making ahead: Bake a batch over the weekend and enjoy them throughout the week.
  • Great for fall entertaining: These would be perfect for a brunch, a holiday breakfast, or to set out when friends come over for coffee.

And honestly, making these at home is so much easier than you might think.

A Homemade Version of the Starbucks Pumpkin Cream Cheese Muffin

If you’ve ever had the pumpkin cream cheese muffin from Starbucks, you know exactly what I’m talking about.

It’s one of those seasonal treats that comes back every fall, and it’s always tempting to grab one with your morning coffee.

I wanted to recreate those flavors at home but make the recipe my own.

The pumpkin muffin itself is soft and fluffy with just the right amount of warm fall spices. Then there’s the cream cheese filling in the middle, which adds a little sweetness and that cheesecake-like texture.

And instead of the pumpkin seed topping, I went with a homemade cinnamon streusel because I love a good crumb topping.

It’s buttery, a little crunchy, and balances out the soft muffin and creamy filling.

The combination is seriously so good!

Another thing I love about making these from scratch is being able to choose the ingredients I’m using. They’re still a dessert-style muffin, but I much prefer making treats like this at home when I can.

Easy Ways to Switch Up This Recipe

I love the pumpkin and cream cheese combination just as it is, but there are a few fun ways you can change these up.

Add Chocolate Chips

If you love pumpkin and chocolate together, fold about ½ cup of mini chocolate chips into the pumpkin batter.

Add Pecans to the Streusel

For a little extra crunch, add ¼ cup of finely chopped pecans to the cinnamon streusel.

Make a Maple Cream Cheese Filling

Replace a tablespoon of the sugar in the filling with a tablespoon of pure maple syrup.

This would be especially good if you’re making these for Thanksgiving morning.

Skip the Cheesecake Filling

If you’re short on time, you can leave out the cheesecake filling and make regular pumpkin streusel muffins instead.

Just divide the pumpkin batter evenly between the muffin cups, add the crumble topping, and bake. Keep an eye on the baking time since the muffins won’t have the cheesecake center.

How to Store Pumpkin Cheesecake Streusel Muffins

Because these muffins have cream cheese filling, they do need to be stored in the refrigerator.

In the refrigerator: Once completely cooled, place them in an airtight container and store for up to 4 days.

In the freezer: Wrap muffins individually and place them in a freezer-safe bag or container. Freeze for up to 2 months for best quality.

To thaw: Transfer a frozen muffin to the refrigerator overnight.

To serve: I like these slightly chilled or brought closer to room temperature. You can also warm one gently for a few seconds if you prefer.

The streusel will soften a little during storage, but the muffins will still taste delicious.

Can You Make These Ahead of Time?

Yes! And this is one of the reasons I love them for fall entertaining.

You can make them the day before you need them, store them in the refrigerator, and have breakfast or a sweet treat ready to go.

If you’re hosting Thanksgiving, these would be so good to have ready for everyone to grab in the morning while you’re getting everything else prepared.

I also think they’d be perfect to bring to a fall brunch or when you’re having friends over for coffee.

There’s just something about having a batch of homemade muffins ready that makes the morning feel a little more special.

What to Serve With Pumpkin Cheesecake Streusel Muffins

I would absolutely serve one of these with a homemade pumpkin spice latte or a hot cup of coffee.

If you’re putting together a breakfast or brunch spread, here are a few things I’d serve alongside them:

  • Scrambled eggs and bacon
  • Fresh fruit or berries
  • Greek yogurt with homemade granola
  • A savory breakfast casserole
  • Homemade pumpkin spice lattes

These muffins are definitely the sweet part of the meal, so I love pairing them with something savory or high in protein.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these the same as the Starbucks pumpkin cream cheese muffins?

They’re inspired by the Starbucks seasonal favorite, but they’re not an exact copycat recipe.

The biggest difference is the topping. Starbucks uses pumpkin seeds, while these have a buttery cinnamon streusel.

They have a similar pumpkin and cream cheese flavor combination with a little homemade twist.

Can I use homemade pumpkin purée?

Absolutely! Just make sure your homemade pumpkin purée is thick and not watery.

Too much moisture can affect the texture of the muffins.

Can I use pumpkin pie filling?

I wouldn’t recommend it. Pumpkin pie filling already has sugar and spices added, which will change the flavor and texture of this recipe.

Stick with pure pumpkin purée.

Do pumpkin cheesecake muffins need to be refrigerated?

Yes. Because these have a cheesecake filling, they should be stored in the refrigerator once completely cooled.

How do I know when the muffins are finished baking?

The tops should look set, and a toothpick inserted into the pumpkin portion should come out without wet batter.

Try not to insert the toothpick directly into the cheesecake center because that filling will naturally be softer.

Can I freeze these muffins?

Yes! These are great for freezing.

Wrap them individually and store in a freezer-safe container for up to 2 months for best quality.

Thaw in the refrigerator overnight before serving.

Are homemade pumpkin cheesecake muffins healthier than Starbucks?

Making these at home gives you control over the ingredients and portion sizes, which I love.

However, they’re still a sweet, bakery-style muffin made with sugar, butter, and cream cheese. Whether they’re lower in calories, fat, or sugar than Starbucks depends on the specific serving sizes and ingredients.

I love making them at home because I can choose exactly what goes into them and enjoy a homemade version of one of my favorite fall treats.

Tips for Making the Best Pumpkin Cheesecake Muffins

I’ve learned that a few simple things can make a big difference when baking muffins at home.

Don’t overmix your batter.

This is probably my biggest tip. Once you add the dry ingredients, mix just until everything comes together. Overmixing can make your muffins dense instead of soft and fluffy.

Make sure your cream cheese is softened.

Cold cream cheese can leave little lumps in your filling. Let it come to room temperature before mixing.

Use pure pumpkin purée.

Be sure you’re grabbing the can of pure pumpkin and not pumpkin pie filling. They’re usually right next to each other at the store!

Keep the filling in the center.

Try not to spread the cheesecake filling all the way to the edges. You want it tucked into the middle so you get that creamy surprise when you break the muffin open.

Leave some bigger pieces in your streusel.

I love having a few chunky pieces of crumble on top. It gives the muffins the best texture.

Let the muffins cool before cutting.

The cheesecake center will be soft when the muffins first come out of the oven. Giving them a little time to cool helps the filling set.
