One Pan Creamy Parmesan Chicken Orzo Bake
This Creamy Chicken Orzo Bake is an easy one-pan dinner made with tender chicken, creamy tomato parmesan sauce, baked orzo, and garlic. Fancy enough for entertaining but simple enough for a busy weeknight dinner.
Creator: Leslie Stokes

There are certain dinners that feel way fancier than the amount of effort they actually take… and this is absolutely one of them. I’m not kidding when I say this Creamy Parmesan Chicken Orzo Bake might be one of my new favorite weeknight dinners. It feels elevated, cozy, creamy, and honestly like something you’d order at a little Italian restaurant… except you’re making it in one dish with minimal effort and probably in leggings while trying to survive the dinner chaos.
And if you’re having people over? This is SUCH a good entertaining recipe because everyone always thinks you worked way harder than you did. The creamy tomato parmesan sauce mixed with tender baked orzo and juicy chicken feels so comforting, but still somehow fancy enough to serve to guests. I made asparagus on the side, which paired perfectly and made the whole dinner feel extra put together without any extra stress.
What I love most about this recipe is that it looks impressive but it’s basically a dump-and-bake dinner. No standing over the stove stirring risotto. No boiling pasta separately. No searing chicken beforehand. You literally layer it all into one baking dish, cover it, and let the oven do the work.
And can we talk about baked orzo for a second?
If you’ve never baked orzo in broth before, this is your sign. It soaks up all of the creamy tomato flavor and gets almost risotto-like without all the work. The texture is so cozy and rich, and it makes this feel like comfort food while still keeping it simple enough for a weeknight.
I originally made this after wanting something a little different than our normal chicken dinners. We love our sheet pan meals around here, but sometimes I want something that feels just a little more elevated without becoming complicated. This checked every box.
It’s creamy without being overly heavy. The parmesan gives it that salty richness, the tomatoes keep it from feeling too rich, and the little kick from the red pepper flakes just balances everything out so well.
And the leftovers? Somehow even better the next day.
The orzo soaks up even more flavor overnight, making this one of those recipes you’ll actually look forward to reheating for lunch.
If you’re in a season of life where dinner feels repetitive (hi, same), this is one of those recipes that will make everyone at the table think you switched things up in the best way.

Why You’ll Love This chicken orzo Recipe
- One pan = easy cleanup

- Family-friendly but elevated
- Great for entertaining
- Creamy, cozy, and packed with flavor

- No boiling pasta separately
- Minimal prep time
Ingredient Notes
Chicken breasts: I used boneless skinless chicken breasts and just nestled them right into the dish without searing first. The chicken stays tender while soaking up all that flavor as it bakes.
Orzo: The real MVP here. Instead of serving this over pasta, the orzo cooks right in the dish with broth and becomes creamy and flavorful.
Chicken broth: This helps cook the orzo while adding flavor. Don’t skip it.
Heavy cream: Gives the sauce that rich, luxurious texture.
Crushed tomatoes: Adds balance so the dish doesn’t feel too rich.
Parmesan cheese: Freshly grated works best here and melts beautifully into the sauce.
Garlic + basil: So much flavor with very little effort.
Red pepper flakes: Optional but highly recommended for a tiny bit of warmth.
Asparagus: I served this on the side and highly recommend it. The freshness balances the creamy pasta perfectly.

Variations
Want to switch it up?
Add spinach during the last 10 minutes of cooking.
Top with mozzarella for an extra cheesy finish.
Swap chicken breasts for chicken thighs.
Add sun-dried tomatoes for a more Tuscan-style flavor.
Throw in mushrooms if your family likes them.
What To Serve this chicken orzo With
I served ours with roasted asparagus and honestly it was perfection.
Other great sides:
- Caesar salad
- Arugula salad with lemon vinaigrette
- Roasted green beans
- Garlic bread for entertaining
- Broccolini
Tips for the Best Chicken Orzo Bake
- Cover tightly with foil so the orzo steams properly.
- Since the orzo is cooking in the oven, this takes a little longer than a traditional baked chicken recipe — totally worth it.
- If your chicken breasts are very thick, slice them in half horizontally for more even cooking.
- Fresh parmesan makes a huge difference in flavor.
- Let it rest for 5–10 minutes before serving so everything thickens up.
